i'0WN OF NAS{-1PEE- TO'T.N' CL(R e / 02 JAN 10 PH 12: i�' TOWN OF MASHPEE S IOR CENTER BUILDING COMMITTEE Minutes of the Meeting of December 19, 2001 The first meeting of the Senior Center Building Committee convened at 1:30 PM on 12/19/01 at the Senior Center in Mashpee. Selectman Wayne Taylor began the session by stating that a lot of thought already hat been given to the needs and requirements for the new Mashpee Senior Center. He also stat6d that the Mashpee Board of Selectmen is 100% behind the project, and will give this committee its full backing and support. The first order of business was to elect a committee chairman and vice chairman. The committee nominated Irving Goldberg as Chairman, and Ed Adams as Vice Chairman. Both nominations were seconded and unanimously passed by the Committee. It is estimated that the new building project will cost approximately$2,000,000. $100,000 has been donated to the project by the Friends of the Council on Aging, and is earmarked for interior furnishings for the building. $190,000 has been appropriated by the Town toward architectural fees. Some federal money may become available through a loan or grant. It is also possible to apply for a State Community Development Block Grant of$600,000 by August, 2002. The committee will enlist the aid of Sharon Gay Travis,the Town grant writer, to prepare a grant request for the building project. Immediate concerns of the committee include(1)where the building will be located, and (2) ensuring that the design of the structure will fit into the location selected. Schematics of the building and the site will need to be approved by the Board of Selectmen before the State grant can be issued. It was suggested that the Committee visit some existing Senior Centers to draw on their experience in design and architecture, and to get ideas. Senior Centers that were recommended for visits included the recently completed Hyannis Center, the Westwood Center, and the Middleboro Center. Working with the same architect, existing architectural plans could be adopted and adjusted/changed to meet the wishes of the Committee, if one is found that is to our liking. The Hyannis Center has a basement,which is a good feature, keeping storage needs in mind. Also the plan adopted should provide for expansion possibilities, down the road. The Leisure Services van will be available to the Committee for site visits to other Senior Centers. Tom Fudala,the Town Planner, will be called upon by this Committee to assist in the selection of a site for the Center, as well as its design. Ed Adams inquired of Wayne Taylor what powers this Committee has. Wayne stated that th@ Committee is given the charge to come up with a plan for location and design, keeping in that the Board of Selectmen will need to approve these plans, and would take it to the Town Meeting for final approval. The$190,000 appropriated by the Town of Mashpee is available Awk to the committee to use toward selecting an architect and starting to draw up some plans. The next meeting of the Committee will be held on Wednesday, January 9`"at 1:30 PM at the Mashpee Senior Center nutrition site. The Recording Secretary will notify the Town Clerk of the meeting date.
