Interview of George Benway , III 1 /14/91 Chairman Sullivan reviewed the salary of the position of Harbor- master -- $16 , 000 ; $1 , 500 per month March through December and $500 per month January and February . ' o •A ' It was noted by the Hoard that -George Benway has been serving in ' the position on an interim basis for the past six months since July 1 . Chairman Sullivan asked the candidate what he could add to this position and what suggestions he would make in the future? George Benway told the Board that quite a bit has been done in the last six months . He discussed several areas of improvement showing the Board (before and after ) pictures of the new harbor house , the boat improvements as well as other equipment improvement . George indicated that Chet Koblinsky worked very hard ; however , things got out of his hands : He said that he spent a lot of time and effort to improve the department and the boats . He has a filing system and computerized the mooring system . He told the Board members that the new facilities are located at Little River Boat .', Yard .. George Benway said that he started implementing mooring by-laws and that he established a dated waiting list . He also installed a tele- phone with an answering machine and if there is an emergency , a person could call the Police Department . George Benway said that they are trying to become a professional depart- ment and that they are trying to help people . He indicated that when he was a Waterway Assistant , they were stopping people in their boats ; however , the Harbormaster boat didn ' t have life jackets or flares . George told the Board that the efforts have been in trying to get a Harbor Management Plan . He commented they put a lot of energy into the plan which was submitted to the State last week . He said that he submitted a Master Dredging Plan . Mr . Benway indicated that they are updating buoys . He said that he was working with Dean Driscoll for a Safe Boating class . He said they are working hard with the mooring billings . chairman Sullivan discussed the salary again with Mr . Benway indicating that the Board does not see more than $16 , 000 for the position . It was noted on Mr . Benway ' s application that he was .currently working as a yacht captain . George .told the Board that he was working for Lloyds of London making two trips to Hawaii . However , this stopped when the economy dove . He said that he was approached by the town . He is now on stand-by with Lloyds . The Board asked when he did this? George indicated that he does this in the Fall and he brings the boat back in the Spring . He said that this was done on his time off . Mr . Benway indicated that he would be working with his father as he was going for a real estate license . He mentioned that his father is work- ing on three big developments , which will be for sale . Would this in- terfere with the Harbormaster position asked oro of the Board members? George replied that this would be done with his time off . i
