Interview of George Benway , III 1 /14/91 <br /> Chairman Sullivan reviewed the salary of the position of Harbor- <br /> master -- $16 , 000 ; $1 , 500 per month March through December and <br /> $500 per month January and February . ' o <br /> •A ' <br /> It was noted by the Hoard that -George Benway has been serving in ' <br /> the position on an interim basis for the past six months since <br /> July 1 . Chairman Sullivan asked the candidate what he could add <br /> to this position and what suggestions he would make in the future? <br /> George Benway told the Board that quite a bit has been done in the <br /> last six months . He discussed several areas of improvement showing <br /> the Board (before and after ) pictures of the new harbor house , the <br /> boat improvements as well as other equipment improvement . George <br /> indicated that Chet Koblinsky worked very hard ; however , things got <br /> out of his hands : He said that he spent a lot of time and effort <br /> to improve the department and the boats . He has a filing system and <br /> computerized the mooring system . He told the Board members that the <br /> new facilities are located at Little River Boat .', Yard .. <br /> George Benway said that he started implementing mooring by-laws and <br /> that he established a dated waiting list . He also installed a tele- <br /> phone with an answering machine and if there is an emergency , a person <br /> could call the Police Department . <br /> George Benway said that they are trying to become a professional depart- <br /> ment and that they are trying to help people . He indicated that when <br /> he was a Waterway Assistant , they were stopping people in their boats ; <br /> however , the Harbormaster boat didn ' t have life jackets or flares . <br /> George told the Board that the efforts have been in trying to get a <br /> Harbor Management Plan . He commented they put a lot of energy into <br /> the plan which was submitted to the State last week . He said that he <br /> submitted a Master Dredging Plan . <br /> Mr . Benway indicated that they are updating buoys . He said that he was <br /> working with Dean Driscoll for a Safe Boating class . He said they are <br /> working hard with the mooring billings . <br /> chairman Sullivan discussed the salary again with Mr . Benway indicating <br /> that the Board does not see more than $16 , 000 for the position . It was <br /> noted on Mr . Benway ' s application that he was .currently working as a <br /> yacht captain . George .told the Board that he was working for Lloyds <br /> of London making two trips to Hawaii . However , this stopped when the <br /> economy dove . He said that he was approached by the town . He is now <br /> on stand-by with Lloyds . The Board asked when he did this? George <br /> indicated that he does this in the Fall and he brings the boat back in <br /> the Spring . He said that this was done on his time off . <br /> Mr . Benway indicated that he would be working with his father as he was <br /> going for a real estate license . He mentioned that his father is work- <br /> ing on three big developments , which will be for sale . Would this in- <br /> terfere with the Harbormaster position asked oro of the Board members? <br /> George replied that this would be done with his time off . <br /> i <br />
