P.O. BOX 1048 — MASHPEE, MASSACHUSETTS 02649
Telephone: (508) 477-0208
i ' i
November 7, 1993
Board of Selectmen
Town of Mashpee
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee , MA 02649
Dear Members of the Board of Selectmen:
The Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council Board
wishes here to express its serious concerns about the
siting of the projected new high school for our town,
concerns which we feel are shared not only . by members of
the blashpee Tribe, but also by a great many other
residents of Mashpee.
• We want to make clear our own commitment to a new
high school. We would like also to recognize with
appreciation the countless hours of effort expended by
town government and school system staff and citizen
volunteers in moving this project forward for the benefit
of our children and the town as a whole.
At the same time , we remain deeply troubled by the
question of the project site.
The High School Building Committee , established last
May, has informed us that it must make its site selection
on November 9. The Committee ' s recommendation will be
reviewed by the Selectmen on November 15, and a warrant
on the entire project prepared for a town meeting on
December 4. As we understand it, town voters will not
be asked to choose between two proposed sites; rather,
they will vote on one site only, as part of the project
package proposal.
This makes the question of site selection immediate,
urgent, and crucial.
We do not doubt that the citizen volunteers on the
• High School Building Committee have worked with diligence
and all possible speed to meet the deadlines laid down by
the Selectmen.
