CURRICULUM SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT <br /> The curriculum subcommittee met on March 10 to discuss the <br /> math curriculum at the elementary level. Member Dave <br /> Bloomfield presented the team with a report completed by John <br /> Hopkins University in 2010. Highlights of the report are: <br /> o There is no evidence that different curricula give different <br /> outcomes in terms of achievement (though Everyday Math <br /> was rated as a having a 'limited effectiveness') <br /> o There is also limited evidence that technology is effective <br /> o There is strong evidence that using effective teaching <br /> strategies can make a real difference <br /> o Changing the way that children work together, and <br /> classroom management and motivation, can improve <br /> mathematics outcomes for all students <br /> Dave presented Mashpee data that shows the longer a student <br /> is exposed to Everyday Math, the better that student does. <br /> Based on these findings, the subcommittee has three <br /> recommendations: <br /> 1. The elementary schools stay with Everyday Math as we <br /> have all of the training and resources <br /> 2. Teachers are going to be asked to decide upon what <br /> supplemental materials they feel they need as grade level <br /> teams <br /> 3. Professional Development will be offered with the focus on <br /> showing teachers how to group students and differentiate <br /> instruction within the class <br />
