Conclusion
From the moment 1 began researching the Mashpee Public School District, I re-discovered
that the town of Mashpee cares deeply about education and I wanted to be a part of a
community with a vision and values that mirrored my own. There is a special culture
within our schools and 1 am very excited to serve as this district's Superintendent.
Our students can achieve at high levels and our professional staff has the ability to prepare
them well for post-secondary education and careers. The faculty and staff are dedicated to
excellence in teaching and learning, and demonstrate leadership in a variety of ways
throughout the system. However, the challenges of a demanding 21st century economy
demand more from our schools. We should-and will- deliver more essential skills to our
students so they will be amongst the best in the Commonwealth.
Over the years, it has become increasingly more difficult for the town to provide level
services funding for the schools. The economic downturn coupled with the expectation for
higher local contributions to the budget has created historic funding challenges. The
collaboration between the School Committee, the Board of Selectmen, the Finance
Committee, and the Town Manager provides.an opportunity for communication and
transparency as the MPSD annual budget is developed. I look forward to continuing this
great partnership.
Many of the next steps identified in this report do not require significant additional funding
and will continue to lead the district forward. However, rebuilding and retooling the
district with new and innovative programming will require additional resources. just as
our work must be guided by specific goals and objectives,we must plan for these resources
through a robust strategic planning process. This report represents a starting point for
such a process. I am committed to working with the School Committee, MPSD staff, town
officials, and the entire community to sustain all that is good and strong in the Mashpee
Public School District as well as lead improvement initiatives focused on increased
achievement for our students.
A special thank you to former Barnstable Superintendent Patti Grenier and the
Massachusetts DESE's New Superintendent Induction Program for guiding me in this
journey and the creation and adaptation of this entry plan findings report.
16
