Y <br /> Many activities have been scheduled for the week. Students will be presented a <br /> question. "What would our school look like if everyone was kind?" we included <br /> writing activities and children caught being kind were given stickers from a staff <br /> member. <br /> Something new this year is a video that Arthur Joia AV Department technician,put <br /> together from each grade level (i.e.first graders reading their answers to the question). <br /> All students will have the opportunity to view the video. <br /> In partnership with the MTA Coombs staff has made coordinated their efforts with all <br /> the schools in the district to commemorate "No Bullying Day" by planning a week <br /> full of activities during Kindness Week: <br /> • 2ND Sten <br /> During the last professional day teachers discussed each classrooms progress with the <br /> 2nd Step program. Second Step lessons focus significantly on teaching empathy <br /> which an essential component to combat bullying. <br /> New Business: <br /> • Distribution of School District Budeet <br /> On January 26`s at 6:OOPM the PTO will have Ann Bradshaw as the guest speaker to <br /> discuss budget for the upcoming school year, All School Council members have been <br /> invited. Dan mentioned that it helps to clarify things for parents and the PTO will <br /> have a larger showing. <br /> • Everyday Mathematics <br /> Dan O'Neil suggested that a scavenger hunt be included in Math Night. We agreed to <br /> discuss this and plan for this at our next meeting. <br /> • PLC: January 14' Professional Day: Update by Patti Kenny <br /> Patti Kenny took us through the professional day. Teachers had a workshop regarding <br /> comprehension, reading levels, independent reading, and "Browsing Boxes". <br /> Browsing Boxes are boxes located in the classroom where students are provided <br /> books on their own reading level so that they can have access to books that they can <br /> read fluently and comprehend. Posters are being made for the classroom teachers that <br /> had the same topic about reading and writing: "I Learned, I Wonder and"WOW." <br /> Teachers were very happy to attend a workshop created by Patti Kenny and Patty <br /> O'Loughlin. <br /> The teachers also watched short clips of reading experts working in classrooms <br /> employing comprehension strategies. "Turn and Talk" procedure during read aloud <br /> lets every child discuss the story and prompts given by the teacher. <br /> • PTO Updates: Dan O'Neil <br /> The Giving Tree was a big success. It was a record year for families in need. <br />
