Quashnet River School Council <br /> Meeting Minutes <br /> December 4, 1997 <br /> Meeting called to order 6:30 p.m. <br /> Attendees: Louise Doyle,Lucinda McKay,Anne Shackett,Alyce Shadan,Donna McCaffery, Sandy <br /> Reichel,Joe Cuzack,Christie Morgan,Nancy Bowes <br /> Public Forum: <br /> No one spoke at public forum. <br /> Budget: <br /> • There willbe a school committee meeting December 9, 1997,7:00 p.m.at the high school,room B103. <br /> School council members are invited to attend. <br /> • Additional 1/2 time aides will be discussed then. <br /> • Guidance position more than.5 for the rest of the year <br /> Discussion of FY'99 budget request: <br /> • Question on posting and advertisement of new positions <br /> • Principal responsible for hiring assistants <br /> • Question about lack of software for computers <br /> Lucinda McKay moved to present the revised budget request to the school committee. Nancy Bowes <br /> seconded it. Approved- <br /> Discussion <br /> pprovedDiscussion on curriculum: <br /> • School curriculum must match state curriculum frameworks. <br /> • Frameworks are available for school council members to examine <br /> • Curriculum revisions go from committee to Trish Parolski to the Superintendent <br /> Discussion of Goals: <br /> Reading Proficiency goal <br /> Core value: Increase reading proficiency <br /> Vision: Children will increase reading proficiency while developing a love for reading and literature <br /> Mission Statement. Reading proficiency is the cornerstone to developing academic success and necessary <br /> life skills. <br /> Goals: <br /> • increase standardized test scores <br /> • decrease number of"at risk"students <br /> • increase usage of public library,school/public library connection <br /> • develop good study skills <br /> • increased readiness for jr./sr.high school <br /> Strategies: <br /> • provide certified reading specialist for students"at risk" <br /> • develop effective techniques for notetaking,outlining,report writing,research,and homework <br /> • continue to implement either WON WAY or other phonemic awareness program in K-3 <br /> • develop reading incentive programs,classroom and school wide <br /> • maintain small class size <br /> Action Plan: <br /> • writing enrichment to write and publish age appropriate stories using Won Way vocabulary <br /> • through budgetary process increase grade and ability apppropriate reading material in school library <br /> • community book swap <br />
