Quashnet River School Council <br /> % Meeting Minutes <br /> February 10, 1999 <br /> Meeting called to order 6:30 p.m. <br /> Attendees: Sandy Reichel, Angela Luna, Donna McCaffery, Rebecca Bingham,Lucinda McKay,Kathleen Penney, <br /> Louise Doyle <br /> Public Forum: <br /> A letter of resignation from Nancy Bowes was submitted. <br /> Approval of minutes: <br /> Minutes from January 7, 1999 were distributed and read. 945 books were collected during the Blizzard of Books <br /> drive. Kathleen Penney moved to approve the minutes. Lucinda McKay seconded it. Unanimously approved. <br /> FY 2000 budget update <br /> There will be a school committee budget meeting on Wednesday, February 17, 7:00 p.m., at the High School, room <br /> B103, The school committee requests that school council members be present $400,000.00 has been cut from the <br /> budget. Personnel requests are still inluded, but are not guaranteed to stay in. Some of the inequities in line items <br /> between the three elementary schools have been evened out, but some have not. Requested additions to the budget <br /> have not been looked at yet. There is no money for replacement of equipment next year. <br /> Math Night <br /> Flyers for math night have gone out. Responses and comments are coming in. The meeting with the teachers was <br /> very positive. Plans are to use the cafeteria, gym, and library. Homework passes and pencils will be given away. <br /> There will be a no homework policy for that night. Announcement should be put in the newsletter. <br /> Facility Concerns <br /> This will be discussed at the next meeting. <br /> MCAS <br /> Mrs. Doyle presented an overview of the-MCAS report. Scores from QRS were in the ballpark for both the district <br /> and the state. This year History, Social Studies, and Science will be tested, as a test of the test. The short <br /> composition will be eliminated. The long composition will be April 26-30. There will be nine testing days during the <br /> last two weeks of May and I or 2 days in June. The tests are untimed, but plans should be made based on 60 minutes <br /> per section. Tests will include more multiple choice and less open ended questions. <br /> Grade 3 will take the Iowa tests April 12-16. The Board of Education voted to expand reading testing to Grade 2 <br /> this spring if funds are appropriated. <br /> Workshops for parents and teachers are coming up in Taunton and Bourne. <br /> Violence Prevention <br /> The Second Step program was introduced this year in grades 2 and 3. It involves 3 stages: impulse control, conflict <br /> management, and feelings and resolution. The program will be tied into classroom curriculum. A Willowbend grant <br /> has been applied for to provide six kits. Plan to start the week after vacation. <br /> School Uniforms <br /> It was suggested to survey parents soon. Council members should bring ideas for survey form to next meeting. <br /> Recess <br /> There was a discussion about unscheduled recess time. Teachers would schedule time during the day, instead of <br /> everyone having recess after lunch. There may be a contractual issue with this. <br /> SIP <br /> Martha Geary is the media liason for all three schools. Forms for media coverage are available in the office. <br />
