1
a+ Quashnet River School Council
Meeting Minutes
May 12, 1999
Meeting called to order 7:05 p.m.
Attendees: Sandy Reichel, Angela Luna,Donna McCaffery,Lucinda McKay,Joe Cusack,Louise Doyle,Kathleen
Penney
Public Forum:
Nancy Bowes asked for the council's help in getting parents to attend the May 20, 1999 school committee meeting.
The school committee will discuss necessary budget cuts due to the failure of the passage of the proposition 2 '/:
override. There is a group of interested parents prepared to go to selectmen with a petition for another override
vote. Fifteen hundred signatures are needed to present to the selectmen, who could then have a special town meeting
and/or a special election or do nothing.
Approval of minutes:
Lucinda McKay moved to accept the minutes from April 15,1999. Kathy Penney seconded it. Unanimously
approved.
FY 2000 budget update
At 11.6 million the budget is level funded. The town voted 12.3 million. That leaves a$700,000 increase over last
year's budget. There was a reduction from 18 to 10 new teachers at the high school. QRS will get an additional
third grade teacher. QVS will get an additional 60'grade teacher. The cost of the additional teachers is more than
$700,000.00. This does not factor in new contracts or COLA's. Every 1%increase results in an additional
$200,000.00 needed for the budget.
There will be a state public hearing on the revision of the state funding formula for education at Sandwich High
School at 4:00 p.m.,May 27. A rally will take place from 3:00 to 4:00. Nancy Caffyn and other state representatives
will be attending. It was suggested to have a poster contest at school describing why I love my school. Possibly
some of these posters could be used at the rally. All parents and students are encouraged to attend.
School Uniforms
The school uniform survey was distributed. Angela Luna made a motion to approve the survey. Joe Cuzack
seconded it. It was unanimously approved. It will be presented to the school committee at their next meeting.
School Survey
It was decided to use the same end of year school survey with some minor changes:
• Addition of a question on a school specific PTO.
• Rephrase social science/multicultural to say social studies
• Separate health and science
It will be presented to the school committee and sent out the second week in June.
