Friends of Mashpee Public Schools—Update/Sharing—Barbara Cotton
159 parents are now included on the email contact list.
The group's goal is to help all parents of Mashpee students be well informed.
This group is about supporting the Mashpee Public Schools—helping to ensure
that Mashpee's children are provided with the best possible learning environment
and learning opportunities.
2. "Mashpee Cares"—Update from 1/6/11 meeting
"Mashpee Cares"is a community-wide effort to develop a plan to address social issues involving
Mashpee youth and their families. There are a number of areas that need our attention, including
bullying, drug abuse, suicide prevention, gang activity, and helping young people learn how to manage
the stresses in their lives. These issues are bigger than the schools and a coalition of adults
representing health organizations, law enforcement, advocacy, and the business community is needed
to work together to support the young people of Mashpee.
28 People attended the meeting. Participants were broken into 5 groups and were
given articles to read about their topic. From the articles, three or four important points
were brought forward and shared with the whole group. The recommendation of the
whole group: Put together a documentary/film using our own families and students—
talking about the consequences of some of the choices being made by students. The
meeting was very positive and upbeat—collaborative problem-solving.
Council members wonder if there is grant money available for this initiative.—Yes.
Plymouth has a similar well-developed group and has received grant money. Our group
may possibly be mentored by Plymouth. Derek Thompson, our Assistant Principal, has
first-hand experience with Plymouth's group and will be helpful to Mashpee in this area.
Maybe a school resource officer could be funded through such a grant.
