O'Connell
Chairman, Board of Selectmen
Town of Mashpee
Main Street
f'f
Mashpee, MA 02649 a,I
j
Dear Sir:
This letter is to confirm the findings of myself and Mr. Robert Courtemanche,
Shellfish Constable, re: the proposed shellfish grant of Mr. Robert A. Graham, in
Jehu Pond, Mashpee, MA. '
li
Investigation of the y
g proposed grant was conducted on Jul 24 1978. The .. I
area encompasses approximately two acres along the west shore of Jehu Pond (near
the junction with Great River) and extends 175 feet from the shoreline in an
easterly direction from the southerly Graham property line (lot 172) as shown
on the attached map, then 500 feet in a northerly direction from which point a
line extends southwesterly to shore forming an approximate right triangle. it
The proposed grant is subtidal, bordered by a Spartina marsh. Substrate
was found to be soft black mud with some mixed sand in places except for a 10-20
foot wide gravel sill paralleling the shore. Depth at MLW averaged 1-2 feet J !
deep along the sill dropping to 3-5+ feet deep in the soft mud extending outward
from the shore. Vegetation consisting of dense eel I
g g grass Zostera marina was
found throughout the mud bottom area which consists of about 90a of the grant
area. L
j
Fifty random samples of approximately one foot square or more were taken
throughout the area. No live shellfish were found. Many paired shells of dead
quahogs 2-3+ inches were found in the muddy bottom. Numerous paired shells of
sublegal clams and a small number of paired oyster shells were also found. It
is my'opinion that these shellfish had been dead for several years based upon
the condition of the shells.
!i
Therefore, based on these findings and under authority of Chapter 130, sec.
57 of the Mass. G.L. , it is felt that the license and operation of this grant
as proposed would cause no substantial adverse effect on the natural shellfish
resources of the town. 1
. f
i
