'r l
;it All G
C. /iLaxone TcG'aexced
PHILIP G. COATES 1 '?C &31tzuX
DIRECTOR
449 Route 6A
E. Sandwich, MA 02537
November 24, 1981
QV/
Board of Selectmen
Town of Mashpee j
Mashpee, MA 02649
Gentlemen:
On May 11, 1981 a survey was completed of two shellfish grants proposed
by Mr. Francis J. Sullivan (approx. 1.56 acres) and Mr. Richard S. Kuusela
(approx. 0.78 acre) located on the east shore of Waquoit Bay, south of the '
mouth of Great River. I
The area was formed to consist almost entirely of clean sandy bottom
.and contained very few shellfish. Sampling consisted of six equally spaced
transects running parallel to the shore through the length of the two pro-
posed grants. Samples of about 2 ft.2 each were taken every 100 feet along
each transect. A total of 150 samples were taken yielding 45 quahogs or 0.15
quahogs per ft2. This is not considered a significant population of shellfish. E
Therefore, under authority of Chapter 130, section 57 of the MGL, this
Division certifies that licnese and operation of the two shellfish grants as
proposed at the sites inspected (see attached) would cause no substantial
adverse effect on the natural shellfish resources of the town.
i '
Grantees should be notified that permits are needed from the Division
of Marine Fisheries to possess or transplant seed shellfish and/or seed/adult
oysters.
Very truly yours,
l/i7'ec"
J.
