The oysters were
2" to 3" in size. The Environmental Police were notified and planned to check
shellfish dealers for oysters that size coming in. One dealer in Chatham sells
oysters from farms that are less than the 3" legal size to out-of-state markets
(petite oysters) as allowed by Mass. DMF.
Also today, a fisherman reported that someone dumped cat litter with
feces on the side of the road and on a dirt path on the property at 5 Seconset
Island Road on the causeway next to the culvert at the creek. The owner
previously placed boards across the path to block public access to the creek
which is on her property. The creek is permanently closed to shellfishing 100'
either side of the road by the DMF because of contamination by fecal coliform
bacteria.
The Conservation Commission hearing on Richard Cook's new shellfish
aquaculture site in Popponesset Bay scheduled for May 24.
Dead white sucker fish were found washed up on the shores of Santuit
Pond last week with no signs of injury. They are bottom fish which were
spawning. They may have died from disease or old age. The number of dead
fish was estimated at about 100 or more. No other species of fish were found
dead. It is not likely that the SolarBee water circulators were involved because
the white suckers are bottom fish and the blades of the circulator tum so slowly
that fish could avoid them.
Old Business:
Shellfish Relays: The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's Fish, Wildlife and
Natural Resources Commission's request for a relay 250 bushels of
contaminated quahogs from the Taunton River to Popponesset Bay by was
discussed. The site to plant the quahogs was identified as the shoreline south of
the Mashpee Neck Landing down to the beach about 700' to the south. If they
are planted before June 15, they can be harvested when the area opens for
shellfishing on November 1. (The area inclosed to shellfishing from April 1 to
