M Town of Mashpee
' : Shellfish Commission 16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
9Sluti c° P MINUTES OF MEETING 8-13-13
Attendance: Marcus Hendricks, William Holmes, Stephen Marques, and Richard
York
Convene Meeting: 7:00 PM
Public Comment: None
Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve the 7-9-13 minutes by Marques
seconded by Holmes. Vote — unanimous in favor.
Shellfish Constable's Report: We put a total of 2,200 bags of remote set oyster
seed into the Mashpee River this year with help from AmeriCorps and the
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe moving them to the river from the DPW truck that
brought them from the ARC hatchery to Mashpee Neck Landing. We also got
6,447,000 quahog seed from the ARC hatchery.. I was awarded Service Partner
of the Year by AmeriCorps. The owner of Gooseberry Island told the Tribe not to
trespass on his property, but did not tell them where his property line is. They
move trays up on the beach to work on oysters from their farm (grant) and then
move them back out into the water aqain. Dick Cook's new shellfish grant is still
being appealed by opponents. More oyster thefts were reported in other towns.
The Town of Barnstable had single oysters stolen from one of their propagation
sites. They also grow remote set oysters. I suggested to them that if they did not
grow single oysters they would not have a theft problem, because remote set
oysters in clumps are not marketable.
Old Business:
Shellfish Propagation: (See Shellfish Constable's Report above.)
Sponge Fouling: Nothing new.
Waquoit Bav Town Line: Nothing new.
08:27 PM ; Adjournment
Respectfully submitted,
Richard York, Shellfish Commission Secretary
