AmeriCorps will construct more oyster trays and quahog .
seed trays. The quahog seed will be grown in upwellers then trays as usual, but
an added step will be to plant the seed under nets to grow larger than 1 inch
before planting in the wild. The plan in future years is to seed and harvest over 20 million
littleneck quahogs from the Great River, Jehu Pond, Little River, and Hamblin
Pond area (DMF shellfish area SC 16) which will remove all of the nitrogen
needed to restore water quality in that area according to the Massachusetts
Estuaries Project (MEP) draft report on Waquoit Bay. The shellfish component of
the WNMP also includes nitrogen removal by the harvest of shellfish from the
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's shellfish farm.
York— Motion to support the proposed shellfish component of the Watershed
Nitrogen Management Plan.
