4 . Drainage Structures - An important secondary source of
ground and surface water pollution is road runoff . It
is important- to provide a system design which minimizes
clogging of leaching structures so that basins do not
overflow allowing drainage flows to run overland
directly into the pond and perhaps causing erosion along
the way. We recommend a design which employs a trapped
manhole where solids can settle with an outlet to a
leaching facility. A regular program of basin cleaning
is also advised.
5 . Prohibit Buried Fuel Tanks - Fuel tanks are subject to
deterioration and rupture whether they are commercial or
residential . In fact , residential tanks when buried are
more easily forgotten and less regularly monitored than
are commercial installations . If tanks are installed
where visible , leaks are much less apt to go
undetected . This prohibition should apply to tanks for
both heating and vehicular fuels .
6 . Discourage Use of Phosphate Detergents - Although deed
restrictions prohibiting phosphate detergents on a
development by development basis are often
unregulatable, an education program by a homeowners
association would be helpful . Educational information
should be available from CCPEDC 's 208 program or from
various planning agencies on Long Island, New York .
7 . Prohibit Use of Herbicides or Pesticides In the Devel-
opment Except by Properly Licensed Personnel - Such a
regulation will reduce the probability of an accidental
Spill or over application entering the groundwater or
suface waters of Ashumet Pond and of accidental destruc-
tion of important pond bank vegetation.
8. Limit Use of De-iters - With the exception of severe
icing events , no de-icing chemicals should be allowed.
Sand is actually sufficient for road safety under most
local winter weather conditions. Homeowners do need to
be alerted to this practic however . This will limit the
introduction of salt based compounds to ground and
surface waters and will limit vegetative damage as
well . Streets should be swept in the spring to remove
excess sediment and protect swales and catch basins from
sediment overloading .
9 . Prohibit Use of Chemical Dust Control Agents During
Construction - This includes petrochemicals . Water can
be used successfully to inhibit dust during construction
should it become problematic .
