1 '
May 4, 1981
i
Selectmen: Town of Mashpee
Attention: Hon. George Benway, Chairman
Hon. Chester Garland 0.
Hon, Jean Thomas 7 <F..
p l., 4
Please accept my resignation as a member of the Mashpee Historical
Commission . As you are aware I have moved from Mashpee to Cotuit and
I
have declared a legal residence in the Town Of Barnstable.
i
I feel strongly that the Historical Commission is on the right
i
track in trying to rehabilitate the original Mashped Town Hall and I
would hope that in the near future the former Town Hall (USO Building)
could also become part of a Historic Arts aid all encompassing Museum
Center. Unfortunately, the Federal and State Historic Commissions
limit designating any historic structures after 1930 as being eligible
pre-1930 .
for government funding. Mashpee suffers from a paucity of suchNstructure
I also feel that the Tribal Land Suit of 1976-1979 will undoubtedly
be the most significant historic event in Mashpee 's history. It brought
Mashpee a Nation-wide recognition and the present land development now
going on in Mashpee is a direct result of this . I would hope that any
Historic Commission in the future would begirg to assemble all material
and news items pertinent to the suit fof the Towns ' historic archives.
I have enjoyed working with Mrs. Selander and Mr Hicks on this
commission and wish them and Mr. Mills well
in their endeavors.
Sincerely,
C),1
4 oe",
RECEIVED C
MAY 6 18
