3
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
June 11, 2001
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
Public Hearing—Algonquin Avenue: (continued)
In public comment, Jerry Schultz indicated that the land court does not
appear to agree with the assessor's maps. He suggested that this aspect of
the proposal be further clarified.
Douglas Fribush recommended that all of the area roads be included in the
betterment of twenty years. He also recommended that grant monies be
considered based upon usage for a public school system. Mr. Fribush also
suggested that the town obtain a complete commitment from Southport in
writing of their intended contribution towards the betterment assessment.
Area resident John Ferguson also agreed that all roads should be
considered in the betterment process. It was noted that the betterment cost
is approximately 2% over what the town would borrow.
Jane Labute voiced concern to the area roads not included in the taking.
Meredith Chadwick made note of increased traffic and speeding. It was
noted that speed bumps are not allowed on a public road. Dick Sawyer
asked who began the initial petition and voiced concern to road safety.
Robert DeLory indicated that he is opposed to the takeover.
Michael Crow supported the conversion project in the matter of public
safety. He stated that the roads are in poor condition and should be
improved for school bus safety.
The Selectmen agreed to schedule an additional public hearing on the
matter. New cost estimates would be developed and the Southport
Community would be consulted with respect to potential contributions
towards betterment. Those residents adamantly opposed to the project
proposal were directed to remit letters to the Office of the Board of
Selectmen.
Motion made by Selectman Green to close the Public Hearing.
Motion seconded by Selectman Taylor.
VOTE: Unanimous. 4-0.
