6 u
Proposal to the School Connnittee,
From the Parents of Mashpee
1 User fees: these fees are inherently fair to our community. Fees are paid only by
families with school age children. Of those with children in school, we ask
only that each family pay that which they can afford. The fees would be
based on income with families of lesser means paying only a percentage of
the total fee or none at all. These fees would be spread out among all
extracurricular activities from sports to clubs to band participation. The
exact amount of the fees could be decided on at a future time. These fees
are not meant to "pay" for the activity but are to be used to supplement the
academic programs that have been impacted by the cut backs.
Z Supplies: the Mashpee school district pays thousands of dollars each year on
supplies from crayons to calculators to cameras. There are few districts
that continue to pay for all student supplies in this time of budgetary
shortfalls. We see no reason why all supplies should continue to be paid
for by our schools. Allow the parents to supply their own children with
material from a list written and distributed by the school system. To
maintain equality for all students, families of lesser means could be
supported by a fund from the district. (thus would still be much less than
the current budgeted allotment for supplies.) Also, many families have
requested the option to buy extra supplies so as to donate to those families
that have less. This will further defrav the cost to the district.
3) Busing: we propose the payment of a nominal fee for families whose children ride
on the bus. (within the established criteria of the Mass. General laws.
Again, families of lesser means can have these fees reduced or waived per
a predetermined salary scale. These fees could be as little as a dollar a day
but could then be used to support the academic programs of the district.
4) Student parking: it is time for the students who can afford a car to take some of the
responsibility for the privilege of driving to school. We ask for a parking
fee to be instituted so as to support the school district. The size of the fee
could be determined by the school committee.
5) Education barilc: just as a land bank exists to support the buying of open space in
Mashpee, we propose an education bank be formed to allow for the raising
of funds for the support of the school district. This should not be a general
