ti
a
Marcia Lindsey asked if they would have to do this for each and everyone that comes
before the Affirmative Action Committee. Sel. Diniio indicated that the policy only has
been in place for a year and this was the first time.
Chairman Strickland referenced the memo from the Affirmative Action Officer to the
Committee that mentioned that Daphne filed a complaint against her supervisor. Jan
Strickland said that he,, Mrs. Farren, Bob Whritenour reviewed this point by point during
the informal process. She (Daphne)was advised to mare up her mind to accept the
mechanisms which would be put in puce for her.
Norma Kumin asked if there was a mediation process within the grievance procedure.
Marilyn Farren said that there was an informal process where they tried to settle it. After
the informal process, you would get into having a hearing.
Ilr. Strickland advised that they tried to settle it in house and settle it on both sides. This
was not satisfactory to her (Daphne). Then carne the time frame in which Daphne wanted
to think things over and get back to the Personnel Director as to what she thought she
should do about this situation. It went back and forth. Without realising it, she went
beyond her time frame to make up her mind. Norma asked if it was five business days.
Referencing the AA Policy, Melbourne commented that it was seven. Mel asked how
long did it take? The Affirmative Action Officer said it was approximately three weeks.
Norma asked when the complaint was first made—what month. The Affinnative Action
Officer indicated it was during March.
Melboume Cragwell said that he had a concern as far as setting a precedent and it is
something they should consider. If it is done for her, to be fair, you would do it for others
if it is requested. He noted that asking for a waiver is not part of her option under the
policy.
Sel. Dinizio said that if she had gone sic months or a year, he would be skeptical about a
waiver. It is only a couple of weeks and the fact that they have never done this before.
He said that he was thinking that the benefits were not apparent to everyone involved at
the time she had to make her decision.
Norma Kumin corranented that as a new committee in town if someone feels that someone
can use the process, we should encourage them to use it. She said that it would be very
rigid not to reach out and let the dialogue occur. She said that she feels it is important for
all parties concerned for everyone to have a chance to use what vire are and that she would
be in favor of a waiver. It is the first case.
