A suggestion arose to review and add to the current Policy that
No Place for Hate is a community action program.
School issues follow a grievance procedure. Joyce M. asked
what authority does the AA Committee have. Myrna N. stated
that the AA Committtee has a role to provide a communication
forum. Myrna would like to hand the criteria to coi-Liplainants
before it comes to the AA Committee. She would like to provide
civil rights support to those unemployed. We need to define
a procedure to get to the hearing committee . Joyce M. will
look into this with legal counsel . Norma K. suggested looking
into the MCAD guidelines .
Supt . Fleury stated that professional employees have rights.
After the 4th year they have professional status . Up to 3 years
teachers have non-professional status and are given an
improvement plan.
Marilyn F. needs to keep her role removed from the hearing
comiiiittee. She would work with the Town Administrator if there
were a complaint filed. It is complicated with the
Superintendent as the person to advocate if complaints are
against the Superintendent . Joyce M. will call Town Counsel
regarding instituting changes and MCAD. Myrna N. suggested
developing a chain of command.
The essays on No Place for Hate will be displayed on
colorful poster board in the Town Hall on petition walls .
Myrna N. suggested that the AA Committee remain impartial so
as to function as an equal hearing board. Perception is a
serious component, and individuals on the committee need to
reserve their comMents. The Committee needs to establish a
clear cut agenda. It is time for the community and school to
come together.
NEXT MEETING: Tuesday , April 23 , 2002 , 4 : 30 p.m.
The meeting adjourned at 5 : 40 p.X11.
Mary GelsthorpRecording Secretary
