AFFIRMATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF MARCH 23, 2004
MASIVEE TOAWN HALL
Committee Members Present; Melbourne Cragwell, Vice Chairman,Norma Kumin,
Gordon Green, Myrna Nuey, Elaine Good and Marilyn Farren, Affirmative Action
Officer/EEO,
Meeting convened at 4;30 p,m.
Minutes of March 9, 2004
Myrna Nuey moved to accept the minutes of March 9, 2004 as written. Norma Kumin
seconded the motion. All in favor.
Committee Membership
Myrna Nuey suggested that the committee look into having two Affirmative Action
Committees -- one for the school and one to represent the town. In that way, an
employee could come to the town committee for town issues and school issues could be
referred to the school committee or superintendent. The committee members will talk
with Trish Parolski at the next meeting for her input.
Marilyn Farren mentioned that she believed that Terri Cook was never appointed by the
Board of Selectmen to the committee. She has been volunteering through the School
Committee. Committee members said that they would like to hear from Terri Cook as to
whether she would be interested in serving on the Town's Affirmative Action
Committee.
Outreach Community/Employees
Committee members discussed the fact the employees do not know where to go if they
have a problem. They felt that a memo to employees defining the procedure for making
a complaint to the Comm—mittee should be sent out. The Affirmative Action Policy, page
14, which deals with the Affirmative Action Grievance Procedure, was reviewed by
committee members. Some other suggestions were that a form be made available or an
ad be placed on the cable charnel or in The Enterprise
It was also discussed whether the committee should get involved with community issues.
Norma Kumin said that the"No Place for Hate" Campaign is a community endeavor. It
is a publicity campaign and not a clearing house for complaints.
Gordon Green mentioned that Jahn Read of the NAACP deals with complaints from the
community. He would come to a meeting upon a written request asking for him to
oversee something. He is a"go to" person.
The committee agreed to continue to move forward to get a person in place. They will
meet with the Compliance Officer from Barnstable at their next meeting.
