Several members of the capital Improvement committee, Board <br /> f Selectmen, Executive Secretary, Joseph Murphy and Vern Polka were also present. <br /> Jane La ute, Town Clerk, ret with the committee- to discuss Annual Town Meeting <br /> -Article #45. This article would change the office of Town Clerk from an elected <br /> to an appointed position (appointment to be made by the Board of Selectmen) . Mrs. <br /> Labute wanted to go on record opposing the chance. She felt the Town Clerk should <br /> be a caring person, someone who would be available 24 hours a day, seven days a <br /> I' week. She also felt that the Clerk could be removed from office by general laws, <br /> lif the Clerk was not performing her dutues. <br /> .Joseph Murphy explained that the Town- had received a letter from the Department <br /> of Revenue regarding the wary* the levy limit, or the way in which the growth rate <br /> was allocated. Mashpee will benefit b $96,000; 9 --1.2-7'6 needed to cut from the <br /> FY 85 budgets. <br /> Fred Blythe suggested reducing the budget $98,000 by the f ll wing plans <br /> Plan A: Reduce negotiated cost of living increases by 2 1/2%. Signed contracts <br /> call for an increase of 5 112%, plus step increases of approximately 4%. Employees <br /> would stall get a 7 cost of living increase under this plan.
