2
Board of Selectmen
Minute
January 6, 2003
COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE:
Town of Sandwich----County Funds:
Correspondence was received from the Town of Sandwich dated
December 15, 2002 requesting the Selectmen tale a position regarding the
use of Barnstable County surplus funds during harsh financial constraints.
For five consecutive years, Barnstable County has.realized a budget
surplus generated from taxes and fees on real estate transactions at the
Registry of Deeds.
This year,.the surplus is $1.85 million, The County is using most of the
surplus to pay for regional programs and services such as wastewater
management-,transportation and affordable housing. Although they may
e worthy, they are unhudgeted programs and services. In difficult
financial tunes-when towns are straining to ruin level services, there is
question as to why the 15 Cape towns.are not receiving more support.
Motion made by Selectman Leveille to direct the Town Administrator
to remit correspondence to applicable agencies requesting that any
and all County surplus funds be returned to the fifteen Cape
communities.
Motion seconded by Selectman Green.
VO Unanimous. -0.
