Cemetery Commission
February 15, 2017
Members present: Ernest Virgilio, Charlie Hinckley
Others: Catherine Laurent
The meeting was opened at 4:00 pm.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the December 29, 2015 meeting were approved by a vote of 2-0.
Discussion of Dogs at Great Neck Woods Cemetery
There has been an issue with persons walking their dog off leash and using the cemetery as a
"dog park" by allowing them to play. Owners are also not picking up feces. The Commission
discussed whether to ban dogs or impose restrictions. Some visitors do bring dogs but keep
them under control. The Commission voted to require dogs to be on leash with owners at all
times. The decision can be reviewed if problems persist.
FY17 Projects
For FY17, the Commission voted to install additional screening along the rear of Section B to
buffer traffic on Mercantile Way—either natural vegetation or fence; to replace the ."rules" sign
at the entrance to the cemetery; and to install additional pole lights. The Commission
discussed requesting additional funding at Town Meeting to allow for chip sealing of the roads.
There is approximately$100,000 in cemetery receipts. The Commission voted to submit an
article requesting approximately$19,000 for the work.
Lakewood Cemetery
Catherine advised the Commission of the article on the May Town Meeting warrant for the
Town to acquire Lakewood Cemetery at the corner of Maple Street and Lakewood Drive.
Next Meeting
No meeting was scheduled.
The meeting adjourned at 4:30 pm.
Respectively submitted,
Catherine Laureaf
DPW Director
