Motion: Lynne Waterman nominated and moved the Friends of the Council on
Aging receive the Thanks for Giving Award for the group award, seconded by Mary
Bradbury. Vote unanimous 4-0
There was a discussion on when to hold the Thanks for Giving Awards Ceremony.
It was agreed to hold the awards ceremony tentatively on February 24 pending the
availability of the nominees. The director will notify the town manager and the Mashpee
Enterprise and Cape Cod Times. She will also order the awards and arrange for the
refreshments.
Coordinator's Activity Report
The Director distributed her Coordinator's Report for December. She highlighted she
attended the Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Meeting and is a member of
their prevention intervention working group. She noted they are working on a very
strong media campaign which is out to bid. Mashpee Cares has broken down into
subcommittees and working on a defined mission. The Board of Selectmen supported the
State without Stigma which they signed Monday night. The Governor started this
campaign to look at the way we view people that have an addiction and look at this as a
disease that it is treatable. Mashpee Cares has the assistance of Barnstable County, the
MOAPC Coordinator Jessica McHugh and Carl Alves with Mass TAPP. Lynne
Waterman stated that the focus is to develop goals with a timeline.
The Director said she wanted the committee to know there is a gap in services for
individuals in their 40s and 50s who are disabled. She suggested this may be something
the committee would like to look at. She wanted the committee to be aware of this issue
and noted she is the advocate for these people she is their voice. She gave an example
that if someone is 57 and disabled they can not get home care, meals on wheels,
protective services, or counseling. Presently, the age requirement is 59 '/2 -60. The
Director was asked by the Department of Transitional Assistance to be part of the multi-
service collaborative initiated by the Department of Transitional Assistance and hopes to
move this concern to a larger group.
NEXT MEETING SCHEDULE—Thursday,February 18, 2016
Motion: Veronica Warden moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Mary
Bradbury.
