MASHPEE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION MEETING SEPTEMBER 13, 2001 Present: Jan Strickland, Melbourne Cragwell, Myrna Nuey, Marita Scott, Donna Lopez, Gordon Green, Marilyn Farren. Jan S. opened the meeting at 4:40 p.m. The Committee welcomed Gordon Green, a recent appointee. Marilyn F. asked for ideas on how to carry out the potluck dinner. Donna L. suggested contacting the Sons of Italy, the Navigator Club (Portuguese) and writing .letters to get the community involved. Myrna N. suggested being a part of the multicultural festival event at CCCC. Myrna attended last year representing the Mashpee Wampanoags. Marita S. suggested having a "No Place for Hate" table at the event and list the towns involved (Falmouth may be involved). We could invite several towns to a meeting. A winter date is good for locals. The Governor's Task Force against hate crimes has literature which could be passed out. The website address is www.r►u«a.org. Also, check out Stop the Hate.org. We will contact Norma Holder -Hall to reserve space for us, and we will contact local people in Mashpee, including the Mashpee Enterprise. We will invite Norma Holder -Hall to our next Affirmative Action Committee meeting. Donna L. suggested holding an event in Mashpee at the new VFW Park. Marita S. noted that Friday, September 13, 2001 starting at 12:00 p.m. is a National Day of mourning. We need to encourage hiring people of color. Gordon G. noted there are regulations pertaining to the hiring of minorities. Melbourne C. suggested the Committee should be updated on these regulations and hiring policies. Also, we need to follow guidelines for advertising to reach a certain audience. Marilyn F. suggested having students write a composition on what No Place for Hate means to them. This would be appropriate for 5th/6th graders. The Committee approved of the idea. Marilyn F. will invite Norma Holder -Hall to the next meeting. minli ursday, October18, 2001. Recording Secretary
