V. %
31F. -
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Telephone - (508) 539-1400
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting — July 13, 2016
The Town of Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order in the Archives 10:20 am by
Nancy Soderberg, Chairperson.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Frank Lord, Joan Tavares -Avant and Nancy Soderberg.
Commissioners not Present: Rosemary B. Love, Brian Hyde, and Gordon Peters.
Guest(s) in attendance: Wayne Taylor, Assistant Town Manager, Town of Mashpee.
At the present time, the MHC's priority is to reorganize all the materials coming back into the new
building after being in temporary storage since 2011. We are in the process of organizing and re -shelving
our holdings. This will allow us to facilitate access to our collections..
After reviewing the revised MOU from the Tribal Administrator, David ThunderEagle, to the Historical
Commission, we realize that it would be premature to enter into the interchange of resources between the
Archives and the Tribe. The MOU should be correctly addressed from the Tribal Council to the Town of
Mashpee. The Historical Commission, activirig on behalf of the Mashpee Town Archives, does not have
signatory authority.
Therefore, our next meeting which had been scheduled for July 20th will be rescheduled sometime after
the MOU from Stephen Curley, Tribal Archivist, is sent properly through the communications channels
which have been set up and agreed to by both the Tribal Council and the Town of Mashpee.
After we hear from the Board of Selectmen, and if approved by the Town Manager, we would like to
discuss the details of a temporary agreement for sharing the photographic collection with the Tribe.
Starting with the photograph collection is appropriate because they are currently accessible. Any
photographs or other materials to be shared with the Tribe from the Archives would have to be
accompanied by a Commissioner and would have to be returned to the Mashpee Archives on the same
day.
We would be willing to work on a draft of a simplified agreement in order to present it at a future
meeting. We would wait for approval of the Town Manager before proceeding with developing a draft of
a temporary agreement.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:15pm.
