3. We reviewed/discussed the results from 2015 School Council Parent Survey,
133 out of 432 Quashnet families responded to this year's survey (30.8%)
(Note: On our 2014 Council survey to parents our response rate was 25,8%--1211469 families)
We need to review parent responses to each question more carefully. Any question that did not receive 80% or higher
in positive responses is an area of concern. Initial overview—Parents are interested in having more than one scheduled
parent conference time during the school year (spring time). Teachers do meet with parents throughout the school
year—beyond our November scheduled conferences—teacher initiated or parent initiated. Having a second scheduled
parent/teacher conference in the spring could be difficult contractually, Parents are also struggling with understanding
our standards-based reporting of student progress. Parents on the Council agree that hearing from a teacher more often
when their child is doing fine would be appreciated.
4. We continued our discussion of our "Falcon Families" Mentoring Program.
We will try to get an event arranged that would bring together parents with the focus being transitioning,
Mrs. DeBoer communicated with MMS Housemaster Mark Balestracci and MMHS principal Sean Gilrein about this
idea—specific to sixth graders transitioning to 7th grade. Mrs. DeBoer also communicated with KCC principal Wendy
Lithwin about scheduling a similar event specific to second graders transitioning to 3rd grade. We are looking at June
dates and will invite parents of current 71h graders and current 3rd graders to each event. We will have question cards to
help guide the parent -to -parent conversations. Babysitting services will be provided during the conversation time,
5. SY15116 Parent/Student Handbook—Begin review of SY14115 Parent/Student Handbook
Additions, Changes, Deletions: We did not get to this agenda item, It will be included on the agenda for our next
meeting.
6. Other
Mrs. DeBoer has connected with Massachusetts Maritime Academy to schedule a tour for our sixth graders.
Several dates have been discussed; plans are being finalized. Having our 6th graders tour MMA supports our efforts to
have our students focus on college opportunities and career options.
Our Next Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2015
(We might need to schedule another meeting prior to 612115)
