We were very fortunate as a town to have the tribe's $200,000 collaborative project part
of our programs for our waters Rick mentioned. He also commented at the scientific
efforts being utilized in creating the new oyster reef projects. Site selection, salinity,
survival rates and bottom types were all being considered.
A new algae bloom was noticed in the Mashpee River. The type is yet to be determined,
but he recalled something similar occurring about four years ago. This only
demonstrates the importance of the year round water quality monitoring he said. Using
crab traps has aided the efforts of identifying limitations to survival of young seed he
said. It has been noticed that there has been quite a decline in the green crab
population. Historically this decline has been attributed to extreme cold temperatures
during winter months. This may be why seed survival has been so positive he
continued.
Mashpee/Wakeby Management Committee: Don MacDonald reported that the fall
edition of the Lake's periodical publication was available.
Popponesset Bay & Waquolt Bay: Rick York mentioned that the level of activity on
the bays was still quite high. He also mentioned that the Waquoit mooring field was now
empty of boats and that most mooring balls had been replaced by winter sticks.
Water Quality: Don MacDonald mentioned that there was nothing new to report.
Sewer: Don Barton said he would be attending the town's next sewer meeting on the
17t" of December
Barnstable County CRC: Al Wickel said that there was nothing knew to report
Public Access: Ken reported access to John's pond was available to non resident and
Mashpee residents alike which may contribute to the number of pond residents'
concerns about the increase in Jet Ski operations. Personal watercraft operations and
moorings that were not approved by the Town were issues that Ken felt this
Commission should look into. Don Barton answered the request by Ken for an member
of the Commission to study the concerns of the pond's residents. Rick mentioned that
there was a harbormaster presence on the pond last summer.
DPW chief Catherine Laurent reported that the CPC meeting was taking place this
evening, the 8f" of December. She felt that the official vote this evening would follow
along the lines as the straw vote that was taken at last month's meeting favoring the
new plans and expenditures for the Great River boat ramp project. The kayak discharge
area was well received but concerns for the float type launching facility vs shore
launching for kayaks was questioned by several commission members. Liabilities as
well as ease of use were some of the concerns. She was also working hard on funding
and plans to repair Ockway Bay and Pirate's Cove pier/ramps and float systems prior
to next summer's season. She mentioned some of the concerns for wetland disturbance
mitigation that may be required by the Army Corps of Engineers at the Great River
