Mr. Jack
seconded the motion. All voted unanimously.
NEW BUSINESS
Shining Sea Bike Path Extension Feasibility Study
Glenn Cannon of the Cape Cod Commission was present to discuss the feasibility study,
developed on behalf of MassDOT and many other supporters of the project. Mr. Cannon
described the project as an extension of the Shining Sea bike path and the Cape Cod
Commission's efforts to reach out to other interested parties. The path would extend from North
Falmouth to Bourne, traveling over the rail line being used by the UCRTS. Mr. Cannon
explained the three options regarding the study to include, no bike path built, a bike path built on
top of the rail line or a bike path built adjacent to the rail line. Mr. Cannon noted the challenges
to include bridge crossings, impacts to the environment, community support and use of the
existing rail line. Mr. Cannon stated that there were 21 road or water crossings, which would be
costly. Mr. Cannon confirmed that he had been in conversation with Joint Base Cape Cod, who
expressed their continued need for the rail in case of mobilization, but also their interest in
working cooperatively. Small businesses have expressed their interest while residents have
expressed security concerns about the bike trail. There would be some environmental impacts
due to the trail's location within the buffer zone. There was discussion regarding the existing rail
line's usage and Mass Coastal's lease, noting that more information was needed from MassDOT.
Mr. Cannon emphasized that the conversation about the project was just beginning. Mr. Cannon
inquired about the UCRTS' usage of the rail line.
1
