MASHPEE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE MINUTES
APRIL 10, 2008
Present: Robert Wooldridge, Beverly Wooldridge, William Dundon, Charles Maintanis, Trish
Parolski, Merton Sapers,Terrie Cook, Patricia Lugo, Marilyn Farren.
The meeting opened at 2:00 p.m.
The Minutes of the March 13, 2008 meeting were accepted as presented.
The Planning and Construction Committee met on April 1, 2008. The Fire Station work is ahead
of schedule. We are a long way from the Library construction. The project is estimated at 18
months in duration with a 4 month slide. The selectmen will be voting on Monday night. The
temporary Library will occupy#5 and#7 in Joy Street's South Cape Village. Parking will be in
the Roche Brother's lot. Hopefully, the temporary quarters will be ready by Memorial Day. The
next meeting will be on the first Tuesday, May 6t11
.
Asher's Path: There were complaints from the residents of the long travel distances from the
parking to the individual units. Some residents are using the emergency exits for access by
leaving the doors ajar. Residents have asked the property manager if the emergency exits could
be used to access the building thereby lessening the travel distance. Vincent Gault, the property
manager, has been in contact with Charlie to determine what they need to do to convert these
exits into accessible entrances/exits. The residents are pleased work is proceeding on their
request.
Mashpee Commons entertainment permit for Friday nights will have a hearing coming up. This
is an annual and routine process. They have had jugglers and a band in the Commons for several
years now. We need to remind them about handicap parking.
The Visit ability campaign is gaining in Eastham, Orleans, Dennis, and Wellfleet. We will have
another ad hoc committee meeting in the near future to generate a lobbying effort. Perhaps we
should re-draft the original letter on visit ability in residential housing, taking out the word
"policy". We will follow this up in May.
Beach access with the help of the DPW is still pending. Catherine Laurent was asked about this
about one month ago, and Bob has e-mailed her. No feedback from her as yet. The plan should
include South Cape Beach, Attaquin Park, John's Pond. Perhaps a service group in Town could
do the work, i.e, the Eagle Scouts, and the donations could come from the Seniors as a gift
project. We can contact an advisor at the School, maybe a Career Counselor.
Emergency preparedness meetings will take place April 16`h and May 6"'. People do not want to
have their personal information on record because of the potential for misuse of that information.
Emergency response teams need this information to properly address special need situations.
The Handicap access web site "nehandicapaccess.com"provides information from people who
have been there regarding access to public places.
