Town Planner <br /> copy ofthe second dry ofthe Affordable Housing plan has been emailed to all Committee <br /> members. Mr. Newton discussed a recent meeting at the Mousing Assistance Corporation and the <br /> petition initiative to strike Chapter 40B, Regarding the Affordable Housing element of the <br /> Comprehensive Plan, Mr. Newton noted that many of the statistics within the document are based on <br /> the 2000 census, making it difficult to properly analyze the needs and identify the actual affordable <br /> housing rate. The currant affordability rate in Mashpee is 4.7 7% and it is expected to change once the <br /> information from the recent census becomes available. Mr. Newton stated that there will continue to <br /> be a need for affordable rentals and assistance in purchasing homes. Mashpee Commons has been <br /> approved and permitted for a lame project that will include 96 affordable rental units, which has been <br /> delayed due to the economy. Should Mashpee Commons build the units over the next ]o years, <br /> Mashpee will still be approximately 323 affordable units short. The projected housing need over the <br /> next decade has been calculated to be 727 units, based on population, and approximately half should be <br /> affordable. <br /> Mr. Trebat questioned the Committee's role in the draft and the timeline for completion of the draft. <br /> Mr. Newton ton responded that the Committee should become familiar with the process, the affordability <br /> rate and the current availability of affordable wits. Mr.Newton recommended that the Committee <br /> speak with the Director ofMashpee's Housing Authority, as well as other professionals in the area of <br /> affordable housin . Mr. Newton also suggested that the Committee address affordable housing <br /> g <br /> barriers bY educating the public and acquiring funds from Community Preservation and implementing <br /> regional relationship to assist in meeting affordable housing goals. Mr. Newton recommended that <br /> the Committee review the document for missing information or any suggested changes, and sponsor <br /> public hearing about the document, before forwarding the document to Town Meeting with the <br /> Committees recommendation. <br /> I <br /> Mr. Trebat requested that Committee members review the document and share individual thoughts at <br /> the next meeting to develop a group consensus. 1r. FIs. Egloff recommended that speakers come <br /> prepared to discuss the ways in which they can assist the Committee with achieving its goals. Mr. <br /> Newton suggested that Committee members also become familiar with Mashp,ee's Zoning Board of <br /> Appeals since they control the 40B projects in town. fir.
