Mashpee Board of Registrars
Minutes of Meeting
May 16,2015
Quashnet School Gymnasium
Present: Chairman Susan Regan, Margaret Bent, Ernest Virgilio, Deborah Dami, and Scott McGee, Chairman of the
Mashpee School Committee
Call To Order:
Ms. Regan called the meeting to order at 5:30 pm at the Quashnet School Gymnasium
Minutes:
The minutes of April 15, 2015 were accepted as printed.
New Business
1. The Board discussed submitting an article to move'the Annual Town Election from a Saturday to the third Tuesday
in May. Ms. Dami would like to see this occur for a couple of reasons: a)voter turnout on Saturdays has become
less and less over the years, especially if the ballot is a small one. b) quite a few towns on the Cape have their
elections on the third Tuesday of May; and c) normally Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May, but every
few years Mother's Day falls on the third Sunday which means that the Annual Town Election is moved to the
Saturday after town meeting or the weekend before Mother's Day. This is going to create confusion to the voters
when this occurs.
It was also noted that with weekend elections, it difficult to solicit election workers because of events taking
place on Saturdays in the spring. It was difficult getting workers for Mother's Day weekend. Now we are dealing
with different issues such as graduations, weddings, etc.
School Committee Chair,Scott McGee understood the complications caused with having elections an weekends.
Mr. Virgilio felt that it makes sense to align the-elections with the other towns. Mr. Virgilio made the motion to
support an article to move to the Annual Town Election to the third Tuesday in May. Ms. Bent seconded the
motion. The vote of the Registrars was unanimous.
Meeting Adiourned
Mr.Virgilio made motion to adjourn the meeting at 6:41 PM. The vote was unanimous.
R s ectfully submitt
De oraDami
Town Clerk/Registrar
