The Board accepted the Last of Read. Property <br /> Abatements Granted. <br /> Clause 18 Application <br /> Chairman Greig announced that The Board is in receipt of an <br /> application for abatement of real property taxes under Clause 18 . <br /> He questioned if there is an age requirement. David Bailey <br /> informed that the applicant be an aged person, but no specific <br /> age is mentioned. The D.O.R. prefers that a municipality not <br /> grant an abatement to property owners under 60 - 65 years of age. <br /> The position of the D.O.R. is that an aged person is 60 - 5 ; <br /> however, the D.o.R. has no discretion whatsoever in enforcing <br /> Clause 18 . Mr. Bailey expressed opinion that total discretion is <br /> left to the assessing authority. Discussion followed. <br /> Chairman Greig asked if the applicant should appear before <br /> The Board. David Badley stated that if the applicant is <br /> repeating an abatement request and is not an aged person, an <br /> appearance before The Board is highly recommended. He advised <br /> Board Members to be very careful when considering this case. He <br /> understands The Board wants to help this person; however, The <br /> Board must not allow the applicant to avoid his/her <br /> responsibilities .
