Board of Assessors Meeting Page 10 <br /> Abatement plications : (continued) <br /> actions taken by the Board, beginning with Robert Ile <br /> {Application Number 21 ) and ending on page 3 with Albert Wickel <br /> (Application Number 104 ) . <br /> Vice Chairman Porter made motion the Abatements on the <br /> Cover Sheet as listed and as read and explained by Chairman <br /> Greig be accepted by the Board; Marcia King made second the <br /> motion; motion passed; unanimous decision. The Board accepted <br /> the Cover Sheet of 30 FY98 Real Estate Applications , voted on <br /> February 2 , 1}998 . (Copy o the Cover Sheet, executed b Board <br /> Members , is attached to These Minutes . ) Mr. Greig distributed <br /> for signature the 30 Abatement Applications that stated the <br /> Board' s actions and that were voted upon by the Board. <br /> Little River Boatyard <br /> David Bailey introduced the matter. He informed that <br /> the boat yard has asked the Assessors to abate a portion of <br /> the interest on some old taxes. He explained that these years of <br /> back taxes commenced with a court case where the Town and Little <br /> River were sued when the Town issued a permit to put up a boat <br /> storage building. The case went on for years . . Little River <br /> had a lot of money tied up in the building it could not use . * • <br /> court expenses , etc. finally drove it into bankruptcy. The boat <br /> and eventually recovered but now has this burdensome tax bill <br /> (back taxes ) on which it has actually made payments of $10 , 000 <br /> now and then, yet still owes about $23 ,000 in interest and <br /> $22 ,000 on the principal * <br /> Lengthy discussion followed concerning the details <br /> receding the court case4. including benefits that Little <br /> River BoatYard gave so graciously to the Town . and, what <br /> possible action could be taken by the Board of Assessors that <br /> would result in a fair decision on this important matter* <br /> David Bailey expressed strong feeling the Board should <br /> t1 et real comfortable" before making a decision on this issue <br /> because it is not the first time the Town a-nd a Taxpayer have <br /> beenp arty to a lawsuit that ended up being very -expensive for <br /> that Taxpayer, and it will not be the last time either. Chairman <br /> Greig made suggestion the matter be reviewed by the Board of <br /> Selectmen, not for a vote, but to understand what options are <br /> involved. Mr. Bailey pointed out the selectmen do not even want <br /> to hear it; he explained that nobody wants to refuse these people <br /> after they have been so good to the Town "nobody in the <br />
