Board of Assessors Executive Session Page
APPEAL FOR ABATEMENT of REAL PROPERTY TAXES UNDER CLAUSE 1
Map- 28 , Lot 66 - owner Peter Swenson resent)
(continued)
. Swenson explained that he will be able to keep his
house and oar if he files bankruptcy . . . and even if he had no
outstanding debts , he would still be here with hat in hand
because he would still have no money . . . something he has to
deal with. He asked if his overdue tax payments could be put "on
hold" for now, He informed that when he first went to the Tax
Collector ' s Office, he asked if he could pay perhaps $25 or so a
month . • . at least this would show some intent . . . and that
Department sent Mr. Swenson to Assessing to fill out a form.
Vice Chairman Porter pointed out there is legislation now in
progress relative to- tax deferral that fits Mir. Swenson ' s exact
situation, but it has not been completed . . . it is coming ! 1.
Mr , . Bailey explained the legislation that will allow
municipalities to defer taxes keeps getting "shoved into
conference" . He strongly expressed hope it is coming ! !
David Bailey suggested that as a first step, he talk
with the Tax Collector about foregoing collection procedures; the
best she could do would be not give it to the Deputy
Collector but it would still be accruing interest for all
that time. Mr. Swenson Informed that the Tax Collector has
already taken care of that problem. Mr. Bailey thea suggested
that he talk with the Tax Collector about making that action
more formal. Mr. Bailey asked Mr. Swenson if he could arrange
a payment schedule; he replied that he could commit to no more
than $25 a month. Mir. Bailey said that he would explain the
details to the Tax Collect. .
Mr, Bailey recommended that .they look at the
alternatives first . . . if they do not work, we can
review this alterna ive in a few weeks. Peter Swenson
agreed to David Bailey ' s suggestions and said he could be
contacted at Fairwinds during the day • . . he is at home
evenings . Mr, Bailey mentioned that he has a very good
friend who is a counselor at Fairwinds; Mr, Swenson expressed
delight and said that they know each other.
David Bailey told Mr . Swenson that he would talk with
the Tax Collectortomorrow- will see what he can work out and
would call him at Fairwinds on Thursday. He gave him his card
and told Mr . Swenson to call hien on Friday if Mr. Bailey does
not make contact with hien on Thursday. He assured Mr, Swenson
that he and the Boated of Assesssors will do everything they can
to find some way to help hi .
