Da r
Town Clerk
Date: October 31, 2007
Re: Vitals/Records Preservation Application
Since becoming the Town Clerk in 1998, I have had the opportunity to learn and
appreciate the Town's historical records and the need to preserve them as much as possible.
Helping residents find family members is a truly thankful task. It is also becoming a very sad
task to relay to the families that we are no longer able to read much of the information.
Ironically the importance of preserving and protecting these records was, perhaps,
overlooked for many years. Our oldest book, which dates back to the 1800's, has pages that
are kept together with tape. I have no doubt that many years ago when those pages tore,
nobody thought about the long-term destruction tape would have on the records under the tape.
Eventually, the ink disappears leaving you with little or no information as to what was
underneath it.
While I had intended to submit my request for the preservation of vital records only, I
found myself reflecting on the above paragraphs and believe that I would be a grave error if I
didn't strive preserve all of the records, including the records from the Assessors' office. I
have obtained a quote from Brown's River Records Preservation Services, a company that has
not only done business with the Town in the past but whose reputation for preservation is
above reproach.
I thank you for your consideration.
