Parker said the soil mapping has been
started on the Mashpee River - 4000 acnes. They expected, all coarse and and
nothing else and proud have classified it as Cass 7, but they have found better
soil than expected and classify it as Class I. Class 7 would require most man,-
agement.
an,-
a e e The tops of .
ost of the ridg'es are. enfield - much coarser down lower.
They're finding something they really didn't expect. They thought' "it would
just show wet areas, etc. This should be an incentive. to get the rest of the
town rapped - produc ti ori from ag r' i cultural point of view.
The Department of Conservation Service has come u ' with a new set of
guidelines for open space planning, it calls attention to the fact that any
proposal must be reviewed by the local planning board and regional planning
agency. They encourage you to have as many agencies as possible to comment
on thea, but actually re wire these two. There should be more than just a
plan to qualify for cost-sharing funds.
What they have in mind is a general statement of goals and ghat you're
going to do to attain those goals, but not cite specifics o One might be to
establish an area for future watershed and establish goal of 500 acres, but
don't get more specific. It doesn't take expertise to formulate your goals.
He said he alreadyx l fined what was involved in pr arI ng this plan - the
best waywas to have the Commission draft a proposal (see minutes of October
21st meeting). Mr. Parker has access to all the background 'Information we
meed and has compiled it all. (Population projections, mean incomes, etc, NAM
gat information on water company in New Seabury area - capacity for /4 mil-
lion a day - no storage facilities. )
We will draft a proposed set of goals which we would rewiew with the
Planning Board. Barbara Sloane read her list of Goals and Objectives., which
is attached.
These are just her thoughts on ghat she would like in the Town of Mash-
pee. Would also lie to start an educational program in schools and further
stated that now that we have goon soil., to perhaps think about tree farming.
111r. Buckingha-m is in to re s ted in an ongoing water monitoring system,
Mr. Parker said it could be included <as a goal. The actions that we are
going to take don't necessarily have to involve land acquisition.
Ire. Studley read from a list that Jerry DePa ria sent in., mentioning
bike trails along the river and other scenic areas, connecting with neigh-
boring towns.
Yx. Bourgeois said the Planning Board 's concerned basically with open
space as a means for recreation and also as a. buffer zone between residential
and business. For instar .e, tie find u tfrial area off` Route 28, dis tri sting
commercial and industrial business - r unicip l protecting it from encroach-
ment of residential and commercial any capital expenditures - checkerboard
type thing - taping what land is available to us - that can save us the most
money - sone sort of protection which he believes open space could do-for us
especially aesthetically.
