a
conservation commission
Minutes of October 26, 1982 Page
uashnet Talley Golf Course, cont,
give their opinion of what is natural and not natural using the aerial
photographs and the old USGS topos. In their personal and professional
1b dP
opinion, a cranberry ditch is not a natural stream flog and a natural
river will have a meandering line. He commented that in reading some of
the old minutes, he noted that there was discussion on the water levels
and the fishing situation. He explained that their work is not complete;
however, upon observation a portion of the water shed will probably' be
more natural than it was When it was being used as agriculture cranberry
use, He said_that they understand that cranberry growers use fertilizers
and herbicides and fungicides on their crops. He said that they will try
to make a statement as to whether this appears to be less in the future
than it has been in the past or is now in other cranberry bogs up and,.-down
the stream. If so, that would be an alleviation of a unnatural situation,
Mr. LaRosa further explained that barring further needs for intermitent
flooding of this area, that there will be more natural flow in the river
i
and trout will be able to come up stream -- assuming that they cannot come
up now because of the barriers of the sluice gates. He pointed out one
date system which seems to be quite deteriotd, He further pointed out
that the upstream is very carefully controlled as there is no water corning
out of Johns Pond and that there is no water coming past the firs-t cell
other than . the water shed water which is coming from the sides arid. corning
through the ground water table. He asked the Commission to give them any
information in order to assist them in their work. He said that one area
which they could not identify was a spring stating that their suggestion
in the spring area would be to i cap ulate it and to construct an old-
fashion spring house.
Dorothy pointed out that there were no. identifying 'narks on the plan which
was being presented. She asked the secretary to pull out the original plan*
Wayne asked that the .minutes also be pulled out of the last meeting with
the Quashnet people.
Wayne explained that what the Commission is looking for is that they define
the area around the tee Haase of the pyramid. Mr. LaRosa said that they will
be able to do that; ho even, said that they see no advantage to some of the
ponding as they think it creates warm grater. They feel that they can help
the situation by pushing the fareways as chase as they can to the base o
the hills explaining that the total crux of it would be Less cubic yards of
filling being a benefit for the contractor and a slightly less fill situa-
tion in the bog area, He told the Commission that they think they are be-
ing asked to provide an amended drawing which meets the landscape architects
intent of getting a mice nine-hole golf course.
Dorothy asked if the ponds were put in place to take care of the grater that
was displaced by filling? She said that she was under the impression that
that was one of the things written up in the hydrologist 's report,
Mr. LaRosa explained that In t6rms of wetlands if you put the sluice gates
in and let the water fill up, it would be wetlands and if you take the
sluice gates out, it be oraaes a dry lana. He said that the golf course peo-
ple intend to use the area and that it is the original elevation of the
cranberries growing. The artifi ial situation was to put boards in to raise
it up for two purposes -- frost protection and to harvest the crop wi
