i
conservation Commission
Minutes of October 26, 1982 page
Quashnet Valley Golf Course, cont. -
Mr.
ont. -Mr. Umina mentioned that they have to ask, .. the Board for Permission t
clean one of the ponds on the road.. Pauline asked .if there was mainten-
ance on the order of Conditions? He didn't think that it was put in the
order at that time. Wayne mentioned that it should be included this time
around. Charlie said that he i4u dnot like to see any ponds unless they
`
intend to use then► as a hazard.:
Wayne said that he was locked between what Dr. Kerfoot said and what
Nor. L- i. osa, said about man-made areas. He suggested taking a look at the
total drainage.
At this point, Dorothy Studley reviewed Dr. Kerfoot '-s recommendations,
Mr, a-':,Rosa commented that two words used by Dr. I erfoot were -used in cor-
rectly; that being, eutrophication and a rapotransformation.
Discussion was made on the ponds. Dorothy +c mment ed that they should still
put in the ponds which they originally intended to maintain the flood stor-
age.
t r--
age. Mr. Umina asked if they oared which side of the fare ay they were pint
on? Wayne suggested going with the engineers best judgement and recommen-
dations, Mr. Umina asked if he would like to sow a number of ponds? Wayne
commented that personally, he would. Dorothy said- that it should conform
s close as possible to the original plan. Mfr. _La_'Ros- comine.nted that
ponds are more effective on the giver side as the temperature is more equal-
ized
ual-.zed when interconnected with the river itself.
Arlene Wilson commented that the idea of suggesting compensatory flood stor-
age is to protect areas downstream in the event of flooding. The way that
is done is not by digging ponds that are already in ground water but by
compensating by digging out areas that are now upland but below the loo year
flood elevation to provide more areas of wetland that are being filled. She
commented that presently, in a situation like this, the Commonwealth would
require l00% compensatory- storage unless there were compensation provided.
- 'hey generally require it .at a useful elevation and within the same system.
Mn, -'_, osa. said that the area is not identified in -the loo year flood
levels. Arlene Wilson said that DEQE doesn' t necessarily care about that
as they want the study done. Nor. La Rosa commented that the area is unique
in that it is cranberry area and the flood levels themselves can be con-
trolled at the gates. He said that if he wanted to provide storage in the
area, he would raise and lower and control as it is not a normal stream
type situation,
Getting back to the ponds, Dorothy referred to pond Mr. Umina commented
that that pond was not on uplands and that . was on the edge the bog
Dorothy said that it was separated from the bog area and that would be wet-
lands. Mr. L&_-% a-. suggested taking and putting that area on the inside
and to push the entire fareway over against the upland. Dorothy said that
it would be dredging the pond in the lour area.
Dorothy made reference to the pond down at the end of # . fir. Umina said
that the pond is already in, but correctd himself and said that they
would like to put that in as it would make ars excellent water- hazard,
Dorothy asked about #5. Mr. a.- Rosa-. commented that there was nothing there
now. Mr. Umina said that they would like to build from the upland out.
