r
MAS11P E CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MEETING of MARCH 24, 1988
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT, V. Louise Behrman, C ar'o l Jacobson, Joseph Burns., Mary
Marsters and Elliot Rosenberg.
Also present was Lisa Hanscom,, Conservation Agent.
B ECH OOD POINT: Bill Burbank and Nora Hayes, Arborist, of BSC discussed what
had been done. Drawings were displayed showing all the cutting done. Pointing
to the drawings , Mr. Bu.rbank stated, taking a typical section going up the
center of the slope where heavy cutting was done and again at the crest of
the hill and towards the pond, the graphic represents an approach that if
they were to reegetate on a one to one basis would destroy the entire slope
because of the plant material needed to be planted like a plantation in a
nu-rsery which requires planting balls in a repetitive form. Two Thirds of
the slope would be disturbed more than it is now.
Their approach is to leave more of the root structure in place and infill
the major openings on the slope with new vegetation, being very sensitive
to the issues on the pond and the question of fill in terms of blocking the
view to Building 7 and how to revegetate the slope. They recommend use of
small material indigenous to the slope and to plant within the areas where
the root structures would allow planting. There is the possibility of
setting a crane up at the more open part of the top of the slope where
there is the potential of moving in to plant further down the slope.
It was agreed at the Planning Board Meeting that an independent arborist
should be employed at the expens'e of the owners to review proposals , crake
adjustments and mare recommendations to the town. The methodology should
be reviewed by this third party.
Lisa questioned the circles of canopies shown on the drawings and asked
if that was the normal canopy or as left after pruning.
Mr. Hayes stated it would be assumed as the normal diameter for that part-
icular
a. t-
icular tree. Lisa stated this should be adjusted as some of the trees have -
been pruned.
Mr. Burbank reproved that particular drawing.
Mr. Hayes gage his credentials . die pointed out the spawning beds for th-e
Bass and stated extreme care, even with people walking, must be taken with
the revegetation of that area. There are 20 small American Beech trees
that will grow and stabilize the bank which is covered with moss and lichen.
There are also small Tupelos scattered in there. BSC thought it would be
appropriate to get containerized stock and plant i t very carefully along
the bank under strict supervision. There was a " Tupelo cut down which
cannot be replaced in that, location as the environmental damage done to
replace that tree would be worse than the end result.
1n the plateau, on a 20 foot stretch, they propose Red Maples , Tupelos,
Beech and perhaps Aspen. They propose larger caliper trees -6" . They
question using machinery on the bank or going with smaller diameter trees
and replanting the midstor,y using 2-3 or 3-6". This will be the Board ' s
decision.
Underneath that, they propose the native shrubs that would be characteristic
