Conservation Commission
February 3, 1994
Page 7.
the law and have it on paper that it has game through the proper channels.
Mrs. Ferriday asked if this could be dame before the end of the month? Mr, Ball
stated he would. try.
Mr. Sherman stated it would enol up with him doing the NI. Mrs, Ferriday stated
no, Mr. Ball is going to do it. Mr. Sherman stated he would need. assistance.
WORK IIS THE ABANDONED BOG: This is east of ,John's Pond and is not high priority
for Brian, but Fish & Wildlife and DMF would like to see it done because that is
There the River i s clogged, with cattails and there has been ,some talk of relocating
the River to the outside bank along the road#which 'then could be maintained because
Brian would have access along' the road.. The flow` f the river could be maintained
which would suit his purposes and would suit better the migration of herring and
wildlife habitat. Trees could be planted to cool down the ,water Which would
benefit trout habitat. That has been out of agriculture for .so- long it would
require a filing; both Consultants+believe this. Conservation funds could be
y
spent on that because -it is in the John's Pond Park. area. Three estimates would
be needed.. Mr. Sherman advised..Brianwould be willing to:,-do th6 work.
r J
Mr. Ball asked. if rerouting the river is something the Commission would want to do's
He estimated costs would be $10 .15,000 for Filing fees.
4
Mr. Sherman stated it would be under $5,000. The River would be more easily
maintained from the road; it could have some advantages. It would be easier
to do a filing for clean up.
Vim: Lotion rade and seconded, that the Agent obtain three estates for work
n.the abandoned bog. Unanimous Vote.
Mrs. Jacobson asked Brian if there is a reason for sanding the bogs in -the
spring with a barge in the water's Is there reason for not sanding on the
ice nog Mr. Handy stated he is running out of time. She stated as a resident
on .John's Pond, she is concerned about conserving water and it bothers her to
see water taken out and then it is gone forever. In the future-, she would
.like to see Brian plan to do the sanding in .the winter on the ice.
.Mr. Handy stated it is a little snaky dorm there with the river going through
it.
Mr. Sherman stated the work Brian wants to do inside the Quashnet river, inside
the confines of the bog is definitely allowable under the AG re s, however,
Steve Hurley of Fish & Wildlife did not recommend that it be done until low
water in August; Brian would like to to it at a more appropriate time for hien.
Mr. Sherman stated he is awaiting written information from him as to how he
wants to do it and what siltation erosion control will be so that information
can be funneled to Steve to see if he would change his mind or not. He will
not go to Stege until he has something in writing.
Mr. Ball stated he wants the Board to realize that if Steve doesn't change his
mina, a whole year of growing will be missed on about five acres as Brian won't
be able to replant that until the following year.
Mr, Sherman stated the Comission is charged under the law to look at wildlife
habitat.
Mr. Handy stated he feels Stege Hurley is wrong and that puts him in theid.dle
of the whole thing. First he was given permission to clean that out and then
it was taken away and he wants to get out there before the hog gets planted. and
