FERRIDA : Any other questions from the Commissioners; a move
to close?
Is anyone here from the public that would like to make a
comment on this project?
LOPEZ: I have one quick question, all the mechanical
machines, do you have some kind of a quick plan for any kind
of clean-up if something happens?
DI LUNA: It is a food grade o i l and under the law, food
grade oil is comprised of white mineral oil pursuant to the
provisions provided in the Federal Code Register and is
exempt as a hazardous material . This material is mineral
oil, a natural type oil and to enjoy the use of it, it has to
be this grade. It is not a contaminant.
CA US : I would just like to make one comment relating to the
drainage issue and disease because that is my area of
expertise, plant diseases, plant pathology. The disease that
would be of the most concern, if the drainage was to b
questionable, would be a disease which is present in probably
o of our acreage in Massachusetts, or has been at one time.
It is a devastating disease caused by a fungal pathogen that
resides in the soil but is spread around very readily in the
water from bog to bog and there are other infested pieces of
bog adjacent to the Santuit pond that could easily feed into
the lake and could easily end up in the bogs in question
here, It would really cause serious damage to the
production. It is a disease we can control very easily but
drainage is one of the important components of controlling
the disease; you have got to have good drainage.
DI LUNA: Would it be safe to say this process of providing
this type of drainage is necessary for the bog to reduce the
amount of the pathogen?
AU : I was over there yesterday taking a look at the
drainage and it is in pretty good shape.
I LUNA: So the drainage, in fact, is part of the success of
this project,
AFUSO: If it was not dredged out, there would be some real
problems,
DI LUNA: If this were not dredged out, what would be the fate
f the bog?
CARUSO: It wouldn't be a happy fate. The fact remains that
the cranberries, although they are wed., they do not like
their feet wet and they do not produce a very good crap.
DI LUNA: In your opinion, would that be a normal maintenance
procedure?
AU : Absolutely.
FERRIDA : As long as our trout agree.
