Page 7 Waterways Commission Minutes-revised September 10, 1996 r idanc�ff r Perfon-ning Te.,ts on Dredged Material: Motion made by Dr. Gordon to approve the formation of a sub-committee to prepare a preliminary sediment plan of the chemical constituents of Mashpee River sediments, and request funding to determine the chemical constituents using funds requested from the Board of Selectmen. Motion seconded by Mr. Silver. VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0. Sub-committee members: Dr. Gordon, Mr. York, Mr. Silver, Mr. Hanks, Mr. Ellis It was noted that an opinion of data can be obtained in (10) days. The sub-committee will approach a professional on the method, but will conduct the actual sampling on behalf of the Town of Mashpee. NEW BUSINESS: DREDGING PLAN: Mr. Ellis indicated that he has accelerated the initial dredging to begin the end of February opposed to March 1, 1997. As noted, the cut off date to place spoils on the Popponesset Spit is March 15, 1997. Mr. Hanks presented a 1949 topographical map of the Popponesset Spit that was once approximately 1.7 miles, and is now an estimated .8 mile in length. (enclosed) Mr. Silver brought up the subject of obtaining private contributions to help support the dredging process. He made note of one extensive landowner/developer who has a vested interest in maintaining an open channel in Ockway Bay. It was noted that the Board of Selectmen are not acutely aware of the navigational problems effecting Ockway Bay. Dr. Gordon suggested the residents advocate the message to the Selectmen in an expeditious manner. Ockway Bay needs dredging as much as the Mashpee River from a navigational standpoint indicated Dr. Gordon. Discussion followed with respect to the Town Meeting Warrant Article proposed for dredging in the amount of$85,000 to the Waterways Improvement Account to be expended under the direction of the Board of Selectmen.
