R <br /> Com—niattee-Reoft � <br /> Fresh water- B illTaylor reported that he had not been able to go on a tour of the <br /> lakes as he had hoped to do during the busy season, and that there <br /> had been no meeting of the Mashpee-Wa keby Lake Management <br /> omridnee* Chairman Jing McGonagle is recuperating, and plans to <br /> call a meeting soon. <br /> Poppone s set Bay- Herb Silver reported that he had been out on the bay a lot this <br /> month, Popponesset Bay,Mashpee liver, Shoestring Bay, and <br /> kway Bay all look good. we are making progress on testing the <br /> water quality. <br /> Today, September)Jim Hanks, and Herb Silver took Maggie <br /> Geist from WBNERR,Dr.Ivan valiela,Boston University Marine <br /> Program at Woods Hole, and Kevin Kruger, a teaching assistant,on <br /> a tour of the Popponesset Bay area so they could see first hand ghat <br /> it is like. In addition to looping at the water and marshes, they <br /> looked at random samples of the black muck covering the bottom of <br /> the different tributaries. <br /> Ding September,Ivan val.iela will be conducting a class in the area <br /> to measure water quality. One technique will be to sink wells near <br /> the edge of the marsh to sample the fresh groundwater flowing into <br /> the salt water. <br /> Mashpee watershed Cottee- Herb Silver reported on a big discussion on the pros and <br /> cons of requiring de-nitrifying systems for eornmercialfindustrial <br /> developments using more than 1,000 gallons of water per day. He <br /> also described the differences of opinions and the fact that the <br /> committee is split on the issue. <br /> Waquoit Bay- Ben Gordon reported that Fred Fordham told him there was nothing <br /> unusual; we stili have the same regular offenders going up and <br /> down the river at too high a speed, and a couple of people from the <br /> public boat ramp did also. <br /> Dredge Conmiittee- Pen Gordon reported there had been no dredge meeting, and that he <br /> will go to the next meeting which is scheduled for the 16th of <br /> September. He also reported that he has told the County dredge to <br /> plan on maintenance dredging approximately 70 cubic yards from <br /> the Popponesset Bay channels. Jinn Hanks noted that he would like <br /> to get tide gauges installed to measure tides before,during and after <br /> the upcoming maintenance dredging. He explained that we may be <br /> able to get the gauges through Brian Hewes at a lower cost because <br /> he is a Government employee. <br /> Noise By-law- No action. <br /> Waterways By4aws and Regulations -Jim Hanks reported that Col. Murray, Chief of the <br /> Environmental Police sent a letter to Jane Labute approving our <br /> revised waterways by-laws, we stiff do net know if the Attorney <br /> General has approved them, <br /> Once the By-lays are lair, we need to update the waterways <br /> regulations. <br /> Page <br />
