Mr. Baker asked Mr. York if he had an opinion as to why the family shellfishing area adjacent to
the spit at Popponesset Island is practically devoid of shellfish. Mr. York stated that it was a
complicated answer with more than one factor. Some of the factors that he believes are
responsible are number one the water flow is too fast for the small larvac to settle in a lot of areas.
The ether factor is there are a let of predators out there like sprier crabs and sea gnus. Mr, Baker
stated that after they did the dredging after Hurricane Bob the current turned part of the flat into
concrete. Mr. York did mention another factor. When he first came in 1992,there was that winter
storm that broke through thespit he noticed that not only did it break through the spit but it took
three or four inches of the top layer of that flat and took it right off of there. Any small shellfish in
that layer would have been carried away with it. The whole top layer of sand and small shellfish
were just blown out of here. At this point, there is a strong current there. Mr.York said he put
some experimental spat collectors, which is basically a setting to slow down the flog* That way
they are protected from currents but also from predators. It didn't really work. Mr.Baker believes
what destroyed it was the dredging the silt out of the channel on the tip of the island.
Harbormaster
22 January, 1999—Letter to Selectmen regarding Drcdging popponesset Bay.
Mass DEP
20 January, 1999—Notice of Application—Richard J.
