January 1998
Page 2.
spring flow that is coning up. It is not something controllable at the present.
It would not be possible to put in a pump and treat system upgradient of i .
Even if it was put in the spring, it would take two years to flush out what is
within the ground water. There is no active system at the moment that can
e put in. As to whether anything could be done to isolate that section of bog,
that is something to take a look at.
Mr. Hoch stated the major part of the bog itself is upweRing. Whore are some
section that can be isolated and they feel they can get clean water. This can
be pursued as they do not have A the information at this time. Another
thing they can do, in a section to the west of the existing bog is an old
abandoned bog that has become a wetland, that could be reclaimed.
Mr. NU for stated there are various options, short-term, 2 to 5 years, over
years; they would like to see it stay a► viable bog, cultivated and harvested.
First, they need answers as to what can be done to control the flow, to clean
things up, and they are in the process of doing than
Mr. Sharpe asked if anyone knows how long the bog has been contaminated?
This was unknown. Mr. Hoda stated they could model it and try to make an
estimate.
Mr. &nior stated it is old grater there that could be 20-30 years old.
Mr. Fitzsimmons asked if anything was being clone now? Mr. M nior stated
they have a large investigation going on and are looping at various
alternatives. The investigation itself, with the report, is supposed to be done
in September. The report is to be done in July. As far as the options
available, that will not be until January of next year.
Mr. Hoda stated if they go with the extraction system to clean up the ground
water, it would be a while before they would get clean water. It would be a
fear years down the road. Also, to put in an extraction system, there is an
issue of upwelling warm water with impacts on the brown trout. With an
extraction system, Mr. Hoda stated it would be 4 - 5 years before clean water
is obtamned. They can Lary to isolate the contaminated area and try to use the
clean area for the bog area
Mr. Fitzsimmons stated this was looped at during the last meeting and it
struck him that the water that comes from Johns Pond is clean. That part of
the bog is a minor part and he questioned whether it was economically large
enough. Mr. Hoda stated it does not have to be in the same area.
