It will take the time to get the bog back and
once it does come back, it appears that ah the tests have to be clean. We need
to begin now a serious engineering analysis m order to determine what can be
done both in the short terra and longer term. He hoped it is not a problem
that gets put off until next summer.
Mr. Johansen stated it will start to go fallow and Brian needs to know what
type of maintenance is going to be done.
Mr. Fitzsimmons asked what are the alternatives; Mr. Handy stated he will
have to start come March. He asked how do you go with the compensation, if
here is no crop grown. If compensation is available, what kind of stand will
be taken. Nk. Hand
stated there should be some basic maintenance performed, no matter what.
Mr. Fit im' mons asked if flooding is another option? 11r. Handy stated as far
as destroying the crop it i , but it should not be kept flooded.
Rep. La it stated he carne to Viten and learn. He represents both Falmouth
and Mashpee and is concerned about the contamination and impacts, but also
the compensation and responsibihty of compensation to the communities that
will potentially lose a lot of revenue in the next several. years. When they
went to Washington, he was impressed with the tenacity of the delegation on
the military to ensure that they find a vehicle to make that $800,000
available. He talked to Senator Kennedy earlier this geek and will be
speaking with Congressman Delahunt tomorrow just to remain vigilant on
this whole issue. He wants to provide his services to facilitate dialogue or
whatever because it is a concern to both communities. He commended
everyone for their work and attention.
Mr. Sherman stated the hog operation should be kept going and the money
utilized well and maintain the cash flow. All of the mitigation steps are going
