MASH EE CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES of 17 JUNE 1999
Commissioners present; John Fitzsimmons, Elliot Rosenberg, Ralph
Shaw, John Johansen, Perry Ellis, Greg
wiren.
The Chair called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. with a quorum present.
6:45 PUBLIC HEARING: To discuss the location of security gates for the
Quashnet Bog Complex under Chapter 173 of the Town of llashpee Code.
Karl Gustafson of Nabs Engineering explained that down in the section
where the bog ends and the golf course starts, they would like to block if off
with boulders. North is the read that goes into Mingo and they would like to
put swing gates after Grafton Poeknett Road. Further up Grafton Poknett
at the intersection, they would put boulders to block the road no longer being
used. They would like to block off where work on SF'1 created the access
road. They would continue down for one more on Grafton Poeknett reel
access to the K2 bog. He talked with Brian Handy and he would prefer a
swing gate. Final copies are to be numbered. The last erre is in the nilddle o
the bogs where the road comes in from Johns Pond. They will put a swing
gate near the flume of the Quashnet River. This would block any type of
vehicle access. There will be a total of six gates or boulders.
Mr. Fitzsimmons asked what was the Justification? Mr. Gustafson stated
security of the entire bog area. The Fire Dept. has asked for lock boxes. This
will be coordinated with the Fire Dept.
Mr. Ellis stated it is Conservation Land, people still walk and enjoy the area.
He suggested putting parking spaces at each gate.
Mr. Gustafson stated they could widen the intersection to make parking
spots. It would make sense to do it when putting in the gates.
Mr. Sherman stated the sooner the better, he concurred. He asked if the
Commission felt comfortable making the decision tonight. He suggested
getting a photo ready plan, take comments for two weeks and vote at the next
meeting.
